What is a logo grid and do you even need to use it?

Well, in this video, I’ll explain exactly what it is,

if you should use it, and the impact it will have on your work.

00:08

A logo grid is a framework used to craft, refine, and strengthen logos,

ensuring balanced proportions, consistency, and visual harmony.

00:16

Also referred to as grid systems, there are actually four main types:

• Base grids

• Construction grids

• Lock-up grids

• Clear space grids

00:25

Each grid system should be used at different stages of the logo design process.

Not every logo requires all of them — but every logo will need at least one.

00:34

For example:

• A calligraphy word mark doesn’t need a base grid,

• But it does need a construction grid to refine letters, spacing, and vector components.

00:44

On the other hand, a geometric logo mark should start with a base grid

to ensure shapes are consistent right from the beginning.

00:51

No matter which grid you use, incorporating grids into your logo process brings several benefits:

• Consistency with shapes used within the logo

• Balance when pairing a logo mark with a logo type

• Visibility and legibility when placed near other text or images

So, should you use grids when designing logos?

Yes — but the right one depends on the type of logo you’re creating.

01:12

Regardless of the logo, using some form of grid system

can make a huge difference in your work.

01:16

Using grids in your process can take your work

from looking amateur to looking clean and professional.
